1. Why do you think the creators of the Community decided to eliminate differences in color, in terrain, in weather, etc.?
2. What would “something different” that Jonas noticed with the apple, the faces in the crowd, and Fiona’s hair be?
3. What is Sameness supposed to prevent?
4. What might happen to the memories if the Receiver doesn’t have them?
5. The pills that stop the Stirrings also keep people from feeling emotions very deeply.  Why would the designers have created such a system?
6. Why might Jonas feel like his childhood is slipping away from him?
7. When Jonas gets the memories of colors, he starts to be able to see colors all around him.  What will probably happen after Jonas gets the memory of feeling love?
8. Why might the Giver not allow Jonas a pain reliever?
9. Why could Jonas’s pain cause him to feel lonely?
10. Why will Jonas not want to return to the Giver?
Its not FAIR. Jonas says on page 97. This shows how He is now realizing the world He's living in is not fair no choice on what happens.
They know nothing. Says the giver showing his frustration with jonas the same way jonas is frustrated with others.

'The sunburn is not so bad'. this show that jonas is getting better at handling pain.

jonas can now see all the colors. this line says that he can now see all the colors but it also shows why jonas is getting more and more frustrated with the people around him.

Jonas says thing could be different. This helps  predict the course of the story he is shut down by the giver but still the thought lingers.

Summary week 3

The Giver Summary
Jonas is a 12 year old boy that is chosen to take on the role of the receiver of memory which is the most honored role in the community. During his training he is given memories of many things including love, family, and happiness. One memory that is shared with Jonas reveals the painful side of his training. He is shown the terror of war. Then, a few days later, Jonas was given another memory which was the the Giver’s favourite. It was of a family during the holidays. Jonas questioned why the old had been in the house and finds out they are called grandparents (the parent`s parents). For the past few weeks Jonas's family has been taking care of a new child named Gabe. Gabe started sleeping in Jonas`s room. On the first day when Gabe woke up, Jonas caught himself accidentally sharing memory with Gabe. As the memory faded from Jonas’s head, Gabe went right back to sleep. Now Jonas shares memories with Gabe every night but keeps it a secret from his family and the Giver.

Conection

By Tayler

My first connection

"There were lots of colours and one of them was called red. that's the one you are starting to see, your friend has red hair..." I can connect to what the giver is saying because I have friends with red hair and it helped me visualize how Jonas might have seen the colour red. I know that the colour red can be very bright so I can sort of see how bright it could have been. This helps me visualize the scene. Quote from page #94.

My second connection

"Forgive me" this is what the giver said after he had just given the experience of war. I can relate to this because even though I have not been in a war there are some war that are going on now like in Ukraine where Russia is trying to take back parts of Ukraine. Knowing about war and seeing it happen in history videos and hearing about it on the news for example really helped me imagine how Jonas would have felt and how it could've looked on the battle field. It also helped me understand why the giver would have sorry for Jonas after giving him the memory.

My third connection

When Jonas started getting all this new information on the outside world (or other ways of life). I thought it was kinda like the news or newspaper or even this blog because it keeps receiving new information on what has happened in or around the world. It helped me understand how Jonas was learning about the these new thing that he has never seen or heard of before.

Connector

My first connection is when jonas is describing the sledding experience in his head
and it made me think about the first time I went skiing.the way he described the sledding was exactly
how I felt when I went skiing but I think i would've felt more exhilarated this helped me with visualizing the story more and feeling more of  the emotions jonas had.

muy second  connection is about the people not being able to see the colour red and it reminded
me of a book I've read where it said that bulls cannot see colour they just get angry that someone is putting
something in their face. that made me think about their feelings and how some people might be frustrated
that they know something is their but they can't recognize what it is

my third connection is about when Jonas talks about people choosing their own mates and it made me think about match.com where you just put your information in which would be like  the elders watching you and then they choose your mate which is like what match is.

Ela's connections week 2

Connections
"‘Ouch," he said loudly, and shifted on the bed. "Owwww," he said,
wincing at the shift, and even moving his mouth to speak made his face hurt.” This reminds me when I got a sunburn for the first time. In The Giver, the feeling of a sunburn was shared with Jonas. He never had this feeling before. I never had the feeling before either when it happened to me for the first time. This connection helps me understand the pain and stinging feeling Jonas felt when the memory of a sunburn was transferred to him.

"’Jonas." It was a whisper at first: hushed, barely audible. "Jonas. Jonas.’" This reminds me of a book I read called “Darren Shan”. These too books relate because in  The Giver Jonas is assigned to be the receiver of memory. Jonas isn’t sure what this means or why he was chosen. In the book Darren Shan, a vampire prince makes a decision that darren can either take an important role for the vampires or be killed. Darren wasn’t sure what this meant until he accepted the role and all the vampires started chanting “Darren Shan the vampire prince!” This helps me understand because I know that Jonas would feel the same way as Darren about the choice for their future. I know Darren was really confused and a little scared too. I think Jonas feels the same way.

“‘ You don't know what snow is, do you?" Jonas shook his head.” This reminds me of places like Africa that don’t have snow. People In africa don’t have a memories of the joy in building snowman or making a snow angel. Jonas doesn’t have this memory either. His community doesn’t have snow. This helps me understand that Jonas might feel confused or surprised from hearing about something he doesn’t know about, just like the people in africa.

"I am going to transmit the memory of snow," This reminds me of a story I heard on the news about a canadian woman who adopted a child from a 14 year old mother in africa who could not handle raising a child. The canadian woman brought the boy to her home in canada where he experienced snow for the first time. In The Giver, Jonas doesn’t know what snow is until the old receiver of memory (the giver) transfers the memory of snow into him. This connection helps me understand how Jonas feels because I saw how happy and exited the little boy was when he saw the snow. I think Jonas feels the same way that the little boy did.

The Giver summarizer week 2

Jonas’s maturity and the rules of the community continue to present challenges and rewards for him. Members of the community do not choose what they want to do in life. This creates frustration in the reader. Feelings of dread and apprehension also build up in Jonas as he is skipped over during the Ceremony of Twelve's, furthering the whole mystery of the novel at this point. Then Jonas finds out that his Assignment, although considered the most honoured in the community, will be filled with physical pain for him. Life is full of painful experiences, and the author reflects this in the novel through Jonas’s experiences growing up in this community. The apple again appears as a sign of mystery but is given new hope for Jonas through his new Assignment. Jonas is learning discernment and pride; he is growing up.As Jonas is introduced to the memories of the world and hundreds of books along the wall of The Giver’s room where Jonas goes for training for his new assignment, he travels deeper and deeper into his journey toward adulthood. These memories and the books represent this journey, full of pain, joy, and mystery that Jonas soon discovers. With this pain and joy comes wisdom and power that Jonas uses to grow away from the community, away from the rules that have kept him and his family.

PASSAGE PICKER

my first passage is when the elder talked about ashers childhood where he got whacked
with the rod this made me think that even though they thought they had a perfect world that is only because
if children misbehave they hit them and sometimes that doesn't work so they just continue to hit the children and that does not sound perfect. pg 54 entire page

my next passage is when they say you will experience pain , real pain that made me think of what could they possibly do that no one in their entire community except for a few people ever felt and how will jonas do in the training.

my third passage is from pg 68 it is jonases receiver of memory rule sheet
the last rule says he may lie which made me wonder why his assignment allows him to be exempt from the rules like how he no longer has to tell his dreams at breakfast

my fourth passage is about Jonas's first experience of snow and it made  me wonder where they were or how if they were  in somewhere like Canada how do they keep out the snow and the sun pg 81-85

Passages for chapters 1-7

Passages

1. “It was almost December and Jonas was beginning to be frightened.” This passage is important because it tells you the plot of the story. The story takes place (begins) in December. It tells you that the year is about to end. This passage is also important because it tells you that he is frightened. This could mean that something might happen to Jonas.
-Page 1, Chapter 1

2. “Then, in the same way that his own dwelling slipped away behind him as he rounded a corner on his bicycle, the dream slipped away from his thoughts. Very briefly, a little guilty, he tried to grasp it back. But the feelings had disappeared. The stirrings were gone.” This passage is important because it explains the stirrings disappeared when he took the pill. The pill erased the feelings he had from his dream. It tells you that the communities way of dealing with their emotions is too just get rid of them all together.
-Page 39, Chapter 5, Paragraph 2.

3. "But suddenly Jonas had noticed, following the path of the apple through the air with his eyes, that the piece of fruit had- well, this part was the part that Jonas didn't adequately understand - the apple had changed. Just for a second." This passage explains that Jonas's way of thinking is different from others. Asher didn't notice anything about the apple but Jonas did. Jonas's mind is more imaginative than others.
-Page 24, Chapter 3, Paragraph 3
The Giver
Page #1 paragraph #1
“It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened. No. Wrong word, Jonas thought. Frightened meant that deep, sickening feeling of something terrible about to happen.” This introduction was really powerful because it has quite a bit of describing words. I also liked it because it was mysterious at first and these sentences encourage you to read further into the book because you’ll have questions in your head like “Why does he feel that way?” or “What’s going to happen in December with Jonas, is he going to be alright?  That is why i chose this as my first passage.

Page #2 paragraph #1
Then all the citizens had been ordered to go into the nearest building and stay   there.“Immediately”, the
rasping voice through the speakers had said. “Leave your bicycles where they are.” I chose this as my second passage because it was really intense and there was action in it and a lot of urgency. Another thing I really like about these sentences is that they can really make the image in your head of what is happening in the book because they are very well written out and well thought through. These interesting sentences also made me engage in the book really fast. That is why i chose this as my second passage

Page #35-36 last paragraph
“It was only me and Fiona alone in the room, standing beside the tub. She was laughing. But I wasn’t. I was almost a little angry at her, in the dream, because she wasn’t taking me seriously.” “Seriously about what?” Lily asked. Jonas looked at his plate. For some reason that he didn’t understand, he felt slightly embarrassed. “I think i was trying to convince her that she should get into the tub of water.” I chose this for my third passage because it is a really important and interesting part of these 7 chapters. This is where you really find out that Jonas has feelings for Fiona. I actually  think that words and emotion are really powerful and firm in this paragraph, and I also think that this is well thought through and well put together. That is why i chose that for my last passage.

Summarizer

Summarizer

The first 7 chapters of the book "The Giver" is about a boy named Jonas who lives in a very simple and easy community where you are told what to do and how to behave. Each year there are ceremonies for your age, and the ceremonies of 12 (which Jonas is about to go through) is the biggest and last. It basically decides what career and life style you are to take for the rest of your life and Jonas has no clue at all what he will be assigned for his career and the rest of his life. Here are 3 main events that have happend so far; Jonas is going to the ceramony of twelve where he has no clue what he will be assigned for a job. Jonas hasa dream where he wants one of his friends (a girl) to get into a bath tub but she refuses. At the breakfast table he tells his parents and he is given a pill witch he is told to take once a day until he reaches the house of the elderly. In Jonases community there are baby's called new children who are taken care of nurturing; Jonases fare is one and brings home a new child who is not living up to the standerds of the community.

The first 7 chapters ends with Jonas about to go to the ceremonie of twelve and I don't think we could have picked a more clif hanger spot to end because it leaves us with no idea what will happen next!

connection

My first connection is about how jonas is very excited but also kinda like scared and nervous. I really think this would summarize what I felt like the day before the first day at a new school. I was pretty nervous but still excited.in the book the giver the main charrecter is nervous about his twleth ceramony(twelvth birthday)
where he will be assigned his job for the rest of his life. this clearly helps me think about how he feels and also helps me understand what its like, helps me imagine the scene and feel it.

In the announcements jonas gets singled out this makes me remember a memory buried deep in my head. In my old school i used to get singled out and humiliated by my teacher. So it also helps me have a stronger experience reading this book.

jonas helps with the retirement house and it really makes me think about the people in this world that help homeless and old people cross the road or carry groceries for people even though it is not their job. this reminds me of all those good will videos on the internet or the articles all over the media. it makes me feel good and also lets me look at what it must feel to be the helpless like the old in the giver.

how they only use bikes it makes me think about north korea and how they can't use motorised vehicles and only the military or the dictator. like in the book only the government can use motorised vehicles like the cargo plane. it also makes visualise how odd the community is and how it is like a brainwashing dictatorship.
